altered memory of space
The Power of an iPhone in the Experience of Architecture
How does the iPhone changes the way we experience space ?
In this writing, we will try to identify how new digital technologies, and especially smartphones, have been changing the way we use and feel space, and how its intrusive introduction in our homes, in our trips, in our jean’s pockets signifi catively altered both our experience and memory of architecture.
Using Stiegler’s tertiary retention and Lefebvre’s production of space as a base, we will outline the risks and effects of an unconscious digital and physical behaviour in space. We’ll also highlight why we need to be aware of how it affects our way of perceiving and remembering space if we want these devices to enhance our experience and not damage it. This will be illustrated with several changes in the practice of photography or tourism, thanks to a few case studies. Also, we will determine how we created spaces of memory and spaces of forgetting.
Finally, studying how exactly we changed our code, our behaviour in space will lead to a larger question, which is wondering if, from humans using tools it is possible that we became something else.
